If you're not a Nikkin and plan to stay in Japan for more than 12 months, you'll need to get a new card and return the old one to the Nikkin service. Shinra id cards are also an important part of the Nikkin passport. If you're using a different id card reader or id card processing app, it's important to map your account so that you can easily find your lost id card. Once everything is complete, you will receive a letter from the Department of Homeland Security awarding you a number. You will need to take this number to an immigration booth when applying for a visa or green card. The I-D number is also required when attending a United States immigration interview. Plus, it can be a helpful tool for keeping track of your driver's license and driver's license card extensions. For a little while after the card's serial number has been activated, you may be able to keep using it but you should change your passwords and be very careful about who you give access to your account to.
