It was converted into a rehabilitation center in 1984 and is now used as a military barracks forambassador corps officers. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986. The fort was built on the orders of British Lieutenant General John Montaner in 1779 and was strategically located on the bend of the Missouri River between the towns of Shawneetown and Independence.
