Make sure that the id card template is available in a variety of sizes and that it is easy to print. You'll also be able to get a bit more out of your public transportation if you have a card that allows you to buy tokens. Sometimes, the border guard can help you print out your id card and bring it with you when you are searched. And if you're going on a long journey where you'll be staying in countries that don't have passport-optional travel, a passport may be a better bet.
